The Expensive Part Is Uncertainty

Product discovery is not a phase before engineering. It is how responsible engineering begins.

Teams rarely lose the most time because they type code too slowly. They lose it by solving the wrong problem, discovering a critical constraint too late, or building around an assumption that was never tested.

Discovery reduces these risks before they become embedded in software. It does not need months of workshops. It needs focused questions, direct evidence, and a willingness to change direction while change is still inexpensive.

The objective is not certainty. Complex product work never offers that. The objective is to identify which unknowns could invalidate the direction and learn enough about them to make a responsible decision.

Engineering belongs in this work from the beginning. Technical constraints can reveal product opportunities, while customer evidence can prevent elegant systems from being built for needs that do not exist.

The fastest route to working software often begins by delaying the first line of code.
